Waqar Younis rocks Australia-Paksitan vs Australia Trentbridge Natwest tri-series 2001

Pakistan gained a morale-boosting victory over Australia in the Day/Night International at Trent Bridge ahead of Saturday's NatWest Series Final.

Having won the toss and elected to bat first Pakistan made 290-9 from their 50 overs and despite half-centuries from Adam Gilchrist and Steve Waugh Australia were restricted to 254 all out, losing by 36 runs. Once again Waqar Younis was the destroyer-in-chief, picking up 6-59.

In pursuit of a huge victory target of 291 Australia needed to build a solid platform but they were rocked with the early departures of both Mark Waugh and Matthew Hayden. Waqar Younis, bowling the second over, began with a wide but then bowled a perfect away swinger which nicked the outside edge of Waugh's bat and was neatly taken by the diving Latif.

Left-hander Hayden fell in the same over, although there was some confusion over his dismissal. Replays seemed to indicate that the ball struck only the pad on it's way through to the 'keeper. Although the lbw shout looked very close the official scorers maintained that the batsman was caught behind.

Adam Gilchrist provided a dynamic response, smashing four boundaries in Waqar's second over but the Pakistan captain continued his purple streak at the start of his third. Michael Bevan being the next to go, bowled with a ball that nipped back into him and pole-axed his middle stump.

Waqar Younis

Fast bowling, in case it needs telling, is tough. And fast bowlers are, by nature, animals with a very short lifespan.

Yet, there are exceptions -- and Waqar Younis, who made his international debut on the same day as India's Sachin Tendulkar, is one of them. With 759 international wickets under his belt, you would have thought he was approaching his use-by date, but the world's greatest exponent of reverse swing remains as lethal as he always was.

Nicknamed the "Burewala Express", after his central Punjab hometown, Waqar Younis in action is a sight for the gods -- the furious run up, the trademark leap and the hurling action have been much admired, never imitated.

The lethal quality of his bowling is best encapsulated in one statistic -- Younis has 57 per cent of his victims either bowled or LBW, which is way ahead of any other bowler past or present.

With Wasim Akram, Younis formed the most lethal bowling combination seen since the days of Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson.

At the peak of his career, as he prepares to lead Pakistan to the World Cup for the first time, Younis discusses with Faisal Shariff the problems of Pakistan cricket, his famous now on now off relationship with mate Wasim Akram, and the intricacies of reverse swing.

Waqar Younis

Pakistan fast bowling legend Waqar Younis has been given the role of coaching England’s academy side on the tour to India. The former Pakistani fast bowler is famous for his lightning fast deliveries and his ability to generate reverse swing. His experience in the subcontinent is also a large part in the decision to appoint Younis.

Waqar Younis will be working with Tim Bresnan, Mark Davies, Robbie Joseph, Amjad Khan, Sajid Mahmood and Liam Plunkett, over the winter. It is likely that Younis will not be offered a role with the senior team because that role is currently being occupied by Ottis Gibson.

Wasim Akram

Right from the days of Sarfaraz Nawaz, Abdul Qadir, Imran Khan and Wasim Akram, Pakistani soil has been producing some of the bowlers who will not become great, but prove to be leathal. I mean, don't you know about Saqlain Mushtaq - the only spinner who used to bowl at the end overs of an ODI. Pakistan captain used to bring back Saqlain when opposition batsmen started to score quickly.

Have a look at them now - they had Waqar Younis, who could reverse swing the ball in bizarre manner, then they found Shoaib Akhtar - the fastest bowler in the world. With his run-up from the boundary, long hair and immaculate physical strength, Shoaib Akhtar is not just a bowler but a spectacle that people love watching during a cricket match.

And now when Shoaib is coming to the end of his career, Pakistan has unleashed Mohammad Asif - A bowler who is as accurate as Glenn McGrath, but also with the ability to swing the ball both ways... and also to reverse swing it. With a height of six feet and 3 inches, Mohammad Asif is fastely making waves in International cricket.

Imran Khan Politic

My generation grew up at a time when colonial hang-up was at its peak. Our older generation had been slaves and had a huge inferiority complex of the British. The school I went to was similar to all elite schools in Pakistan . Despite gaining independent, they were, and still are, producing replicas of public schoolboys rather than Pakistanis.

I read Shakespeare, which was fine, but no Allama Iqbal – the national poet of Pakistan . The class on Islamic studies was not taken seriously, and when I left school I was considered among the elite of the country because I could speak English and wore Western clothes.

Despite periodically shouting ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ in school functions, I considered my own culture backward and religion outdated. Among our group if any one talked about religion, prayed or kept a beard he was immediately branded a Mullah.

Because of the power of the Western media, our heroes were Western movie stars or pop stars. When I went to Oxford already burdened with this hang up, things didn’t get any easier. At Oxford , not just Islam, but all religions were considered anachronism. Science had replaced religion and if something couldn’t be logically proved it did not exist. All supernatural stuff was confined to the movies.

Philosophers like Darwin , who with his half-baked theory of evolution had supposedly disproved the creation of men and hence religion, were read and revered. Moreover, European history reflected its awful experience with religion. The horrors committed by the Christian clergy during the Inquisition era had left a powerful impact on the Western mind.

To understand why the West is so keen on secularism, one should go to places like Cordoba in Spain and see the torture apparatus used during the Spanish Inquisition. Also the persecution of scientists as heretics by the clergy had convinced the Europeans that all religions are regressive.

Pakistan Win the World Cup 1992

After a remarkable career as captain of Pakistan's national cricket team, Imran Khan parlayed his fame and fortune into a successful career as one of Pakistan's most prominent politicians. Following his retirement from international cricket in 1992, Khan founded the Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital & Research Center. Four years later, Khan founded the Movement for Justice, a sociopolitical movement with the intent to expose the supposed corruption of Pakistan's ruling elite. Khan eventually won a place in Parliament in 2002 and has been a popular, albeit controversial member ever since.

So then, the day is here when Pakistan vie for a world title.

In about 4 hours, the players will take the field for the warm ups, toss, national anthems, and the game!

I have hardly been able to sleep.

I'd be lieing if I say that I'm not stressed about the match and that it doesn't matter who wins because Pakistan has already exceeded everyone's expectations by reaching the World Twenty20 final.

Bullsh*t!

Ofcourse it matters.

I want Pakistan to win. I will have it no other way.

Yes they've done great to get this far. Yes they had an awesome semi final. Yes they have surpassed all expectations.

Yes I want a world cup win!

As I finally stopped attempting to sleep, I wondered, "agar meri yeh haalat hai, to team ki kya haalat hogi?", i.e. "If I am this tense, what would the team be going through?".

I've been playing cricket since my school days. Though now I sleep peacefully the night before my match, back in the school days I could hardly do it, constantly turning over in bed in anticipation of the morning and my big game.

I'm sure many of you have gone through the same.

Considering that, imagine the plight of Mohammad Aamer and Shahzaib Hasan. Even Ahmed Shehzad for that matter.

These boys are still in their teens and will be trying to win their country a world cup final - one opening the bowling, the other the batting.

I just hope the occasion does not get the better of them.

A decade ago, Pakistan played another final at Lord's. Once again with a very young team. Back then, nerves got the better of them.

I hope that is not the case this time.

Having said all that, I am very much looking forward to the match, despite being a nervous wreck at the moment!

The match should be a cracker; both the teams are closely matched and should give each other tough competition.

I'll be back at the same venue where I was for the semi final on Thursday with the same contingent of 30, and maybe more, cheering Pakistan on.

Here's hoping for a Pakistan win!

Saeed Anwar as a One Day Player

On 1st January 1989, Saeed Anwar made his O.D.I debut against West Indies at Perth in a World Series game . Saeed Anwar batted at no.3 and could score only 3 runs getting out to the fiery Malcolm Marshall . Saeed Anwar's O.D.I career started on a difficult Down Under Tour and his first three innings, he had scores of 3,15 and 0. Another 8 poor innings from Saeed (excepting the 42* in the home series against India) followed . However on 10th March 1990, a day to remember for Saeed -as he posted his maiden One day International Hundred against Sri Lanka at the Adelaide Oval in a Benson And Hedges World Series league match . Incidentally Saeed along with Rameez Raza put on 202 runs for the 1st wicket in that match . After this innings, there was no looking back for Saeed Anwar as he scored centuries after centuries and at one stage, Saeed had more number of centuries than his half-centuries !!! In the mid-nineties, Saeed Anwar and Aamir Sohail were a very formidable opening pair .

Saeed Anwar has the honour of playing one of the best One Day Innings ever , scoring a huge 194 against India on 21st May 1997 in the Pepsi Independence Cup league match at Chennai . Saeed Anwar has a special fondness to the Indian Bowling taking 2002 runs (in 50 matches) out of the 8823 runs he scored in 247 O.D.Is . Saeed scoring as many as 4 hundreds and 8 fifties in the 50 matches he played against India .

Overall Saeed Anwar scored 8823 runs in the 247 matches long career and scoring 20 hundreds and 43 fifties . He has a healthy batting average of 39.2 and to his credit has 42 catches as a fielder .

Saeed Anwar after scoring his century against India

In the morning of the match, people ambled along Bells Road. Few hours later, they might have needed helmets. Watching Saeed Anwar's 194 off 146 unfold, was akin to watching a cricketing video manual. There was no shot that was beyond him, no gap that he did not pierce and no part of the ground that he left untouched. When a left-hander lets loose, it's buffet for the eyes.
And a buffet it was. Piercing the field 22 times and clearing it five times just shows how it was not a mere slog show, but a solid technical exhibition — be it his characteristic offside lashes or shots down midwicket. The large crowds, characteristic of India-Pakistan encounters were initially stunned into silence. But in true Chennai style, once they got a whiff of the records that were about to tumble, they were no applause misers.
It was also a match where leg-work grabbed as much attention as bat-work. Shahid Afridi did the running for Anwar, while Sachin Tendulkar briefly did the same for Rahul Dravid, who cracked a valiant century while chasing Pakistan's 327.
But his effort melted in Anwar's runs rain. True that it was India's Independence Cup, true that the crowds would have preferred a man-in-blue, or even a man in yellow, maroon, black or red, than a man in green, from across the border to create fireworks. But they still applauded, cheered, some grudgingly, and gave him a standing ovation. Because on that day, Saeed Anwar did what no India-Pakistan encounter ever does. He took cricket above country.

Razzaq Returns

Pakistani all-rounder Abdul Razzaq has announced that he is taking back his decision of retirement from the International Cricket and is returning back to the International arena. He thought that upon his decision, Dr. Nasim Ashraf, the chairman of PCB would go delirious with joy, and Salahuddin Sallu, the chief selector would perform a “Bhangra” and the rest of team will throw a party, while nation will celebrate an Eid-like day.
Amazingly enough that didn’t exactly happen. Dr. Nasim Ashraf expresses his “utter” amazement at Razzaq’s decision and said that he thought perhaps Razzaq was somewhere out there fitting the CNG kits in the cars, and Salahuddin Sallu said indifferently that Razzaq cannot join the national team straight away and he would have to show his performance in the domestic cricket.
Abdul Razzaq has said that he made a mistake in haste, when he took retirement from the cricket after getting dropped from the Twenty20 squad, and now after much ponder and discussion with his coach and club, he realized his blunder and now want to play again for Pakistan. Now Abdul Razzaq will represent Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) in the Quaid-e-Azam trophy, and if he succeeds in showing his form and fitness in the first class matches, then he might get a chance in the team.
Abdul Razzaq has always been a dumb thingie. He never was able to show any consistency in his performance. He was neither a bowler nor a batsman, rather a bizarre mixture of both. He only performed in some of the ODIs, where he used to slog in the final five or so overs. But now for quite sometime he had become a useless component of team. Then, he demanded that he should be made captain of the national team, after the ignominious departure of Inzi. Upon this dumb and ridiculous demand, everybody laughed and board just ignored him. He then went to Indian Cricket Leauge (ICL), and still his status is unclear in ICL

Yasir Hameed Century Sinks Australia

James Hopes hit an unbeaten 55 from 46 balls as but it wasn't enough as a Yasir Hameed century and a half-century from Faisal Iqbal ensured Pakistan A emerged victorious from the opening one-dayer in Lahore.Chasing 233 to win, Australian hopes were raised then Doug Bollinger dismissed Taufeeq Umar for 9 before Hameed added 41 with Khalid Latif (32) and then an unbroken partnership of 165 with captain Iqbal.Hameed's runs came from 111 balls and included 15 fours, while Iqbal faced 96 deliveries, six of which were despatched for four, and two for maximums.Pakistan A required 41 overs to seal the win.Earlier, Australia's innings got off to a poor start when Luke Ronchi was dismissed for a six-ball duck and David Hussey departed for 18, before Phil Jaques (46) and captain Adam Voges (44) added 51 for the third wicket to stabilise the innings.Taufeeq Umar picked up the wickets of Voges and Cameron White for 12 before Hopes's heroics, which included five fours in his innings, pushed Australia to a competitive score.Umar returned the best figures of two for 33 while there was a wicket each for Mohammad Irshad and Tahir Khan. Umar also effected one of three run outs

Australia debut in 1999, Adam Gilchrist

He holds the record for the highest number of sixes in Test cricket, won three World Cups and was a mainstay of one of the greatest Test teams of all-time.
He also managed to maintain his dignity and the respect of his fellow players playing in an Australia team which pushed 'sportsmanship' to the very limits.
Then, suddenly, decided he was not able to compete at his very best anymore and quit Test cricket, four appearances short of the 'magical' 100 mark.

Gilly wanted to quit a year ago, says wife Mel

ADAM Gilchrist has said he always put his family before cricket — we now discover they have been happy to put him before them, too. The star wicketkeeper-batsman's wife Melissa has told The Australian Women's Weekly magazine, which goes on sale today, that he was ready to give the game away at the end of last summer's Ashes series but she coaxed him into re-thinking his decision. The 36-year-old otherwise would have joined fellow greats Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Justin Langer, who all ended their Test careers with Australia's Ashes triumph, after batsman Damien Martyn quit the game mid-series. "Adam was just so worn out, so, so tired, and it took a lot out of him," Melissa said. "When he told me then we was thinking of retiring, I just felt that he needed to rest and build himself back up before he made such a critical decision. And, as a result, he stayed on." It is unclear whether Gilchrist would have left the game immediately had he gone through with his retirement decision at that time, or played on to take part in Australia's victorious World Cup campaign, as McGrath did. As it turned out, he starred in the World Cup final, belting an incredible 149 off 104 balls in Barbados last April, to lead Australia to a historic third consecutive triumph. He, McGrath and skipper Ricky Ponting were the only players to play in the World Cup successes of 1999, 2003 and 2007. Gilchrist went on this summer to take his Test dismissal tally to 416, along the way passing his predecessor Ian Healy (395 dismissals) as the nation's most prolific gloveman. He also briefly held the world record, overtaking South African Mark Boucher's tally of 413 in his final Test, before Boucher regained the lead against Bangladesh last Sunday. Melissa Gilchrist said that when her husband eventually did announce he was pulling the pin on his acclaimed career during the Adelaide Test last month, she was certain the timing was right. "When he rang this time from Adelaide and said, 'Do you know what? I think I'm done', I just said, 'Yes, go for it, that sounds so right'." She said the decision came down to a choice of family over cricket. Gilchrist will complete his international duties at the conclusion of the current tri-series against India and Sri Lanka. His last MCG game is on Friday.

Gilchrist credits squash ball after Cup final heroics

Australia's Adam Gilchrist credited a squash ball stuffed inside his glove after pulverising Sri Lanka's bowlers with his match-winning 149 in the World Cup final on Saturday.
Gilchrist hit 13 fours and eight sixes from just 104 balls and pointed to his glove as he celebrated the fastest hundred in the history of Cup finals.
"I was pretty pumped up," he told a news conference after being named the player-of-the-final. Australia beat Sri Lanka by 53 runs on the Duckworth-Lewis method for truncated games to complete a unique hat-trick of World Cup titles.
Australia piled up 281 for four in the 38-overs-a-side match after a delayed start due to rain. Sri Lanka ended at 215 for eight after two more overs were deducted due to the weather.
"I also had a little message, to wave to someone at home in Australia about something in my glove," he said.
"(It was) the guy (Bob Meuleman) who helps me with my batting at home," he explained. "I had a squash ball in my bottom hand in the glove that I use in training just to help with my grip.

India did against Australia

Nothing can be better than proving on the cricket field that you are the best. That's what India did against Australia that they are still Twenty20 World Champ.Gautam Gambhir & Yuvraj Singh again proved that they are the master batsman in this form of the game. On the bowling side, Harbhajan was just delight to watch.

Deccan Chargers top charts after heart-stopping clash

The heart pounded the chest relentlessly – from the time Anil Kumble bowled Adam Gilchrist to long after the entire Deccan Chargers dug out raced to the middle to celebrate a fairytale victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore in DLF Indian Premier League final on Sunday. It was a night when the Deccan Chargers refused to be tamed the Bull Ring. The heart sought to gloss over Herschelle Gibbs's effort – painstaking and scratchy for the most past – when Deccan Chargers batted first. He finished with 53 not out off 48 balls. But the mind reminded the heart that it was perhaps the single most significant batting effort on a sluggish track in the grand final. Deccan Chargers ended up with 143 for six in 20 overs. The heart cringed a bit when the vastly experienced Andrew Symonds chatted up Royal Challengers Bangalore young opener Manish Pandey but it also knew that the teenager will have grown up considerably. Pandey, of course, heard more of Symonds and faced the attack less as had got to play but seven deliveries before being dismissed by Pragyan Ojha.Ojha took a leaf out of Kumble's book, put his hand up for his team and finished with three for 28 to play the lead role in Deccan Chargers' spectacular defence of the low score. Of course there were others who made it work for the team that drew on the twin fuels of hunger and self-belief as they pursued their goal with single-mindedness.Ryan Harris starting the proceedings with a maiden over to Jacques Kallis; little-known Punjab fast medium bowler Harmeet Singh showing character under pressure and claiming two for 23; Andrew Symonds returning to scalp the dangerous Ross Taylor and Virat Kohli; RP Singh conjuring Kallis' dismissal and finishing with 4-0-16-1.There was more. A spectacular catch by Harmeet Singh, who sprinted from long leg and lunged forward to get his hands under the skyer to dismiss a defiant Vinay Kumar in the 19th over. Gilchrist himself contributed with two wonderful stumping dismissals to curtain the innings of Roelof van der Merwe and Kohli. The sum of such wonderful parts was beautiful. Then again, it was hard for the heart not to reach to the gallant Anil Kumble. It is not often that a man does everything he could possibly do – bowl with the new ball and claim Adam Gilchrist, come back to pick up the wickets of Andrew Symonds and Rohit Sharma at critical junctures – and end up having to watch his team fall short by six runs. Two teams that had finished eighth and seventh last season fought every inch and one had to run out winner at the end of a stunning game that climaxed a wonderful tournament. Believe me, the heart hasn't stop pounding through the writing of this piece; the words flowed even as a spectacular closing ceremony that followed such a breathtaking match.

Kings XI Punjab and Chennai Super Kings have had contrasting paths to the semifinals of the Indian Premier League. While Yuvraj Singh-led Kings XI ensured their place in the knockout stage with some games left, the MS Dhoni-led Super Kings left it until their last game in the league stage to qualify for the semifinals.
The Super Kings though won both their league games against Kings XI and these two victories should give the Chennai side the psychological edge going into the semifinals on Saturday night, but based on recent performances and the composition of the squads, the teams look to be evenly matched as they look to book themselves a place in the final of the inaugural IPL
